Do We Need to Stay In Iraq? http://rleeermey.org/viewtopic.php?t=10141&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

While Americans are thinking about Do We Need to Stay In Iraq, are they researching and investigating any of their assumptions through the world wide net? I know many Americans who don’t have computers, don’t surf the net, listen to the radio rather then news on countless cable stations and networks, chat on forums, read blogs, local and national newspapers, magazines and some so fed up they refuse to stay informed but have a bunch of opinions, the American people.

If I’m not mistaken and I have been on occasion, the United Nations tied the U. S. hands with a clear mandate to defend Kuwait but leave that starving craved nut in power during our first Bush President during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

His son, our present President feared that Iraq had enriched uranium or at least the capacity to make it and that there critter, defiant before the United Nations, refused to allow proper inspections of its nuclear technologies and while he was a mass murderer, violated human rights, the latter was of no clear threat to the U. S. while his ambiguous nuclear technology program was.

Therefore, Iran’s ambiguous nuclear technology program today, threatening the State of Israel with total destruction of there race and death to Americans, disrupting world order, peace and stability by pressuring countries to go along with their program and Iran’s refusal to stop their quest for enriched uranium clearly poses a greater threat then that there starving critter, the former President of Iraq and soon to be dead human rights violator.

Clark: Hanging Saddam Would Cause Chaos - Thursday, October 5, 2006 (AP) - Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, a member of Saddam Hussein's defense team, predicted on Thursday that a bloodbath would follow should an Iraqi court trying the former president have him executed.

At a news conference, Clark said he feared that should Saddam and the others be hanged, "catastrophic violence" would follow that would lead to "the end of civilization as we know it in the birthplace of civilization, Mesopotamia. Total, unmitigated chaos."

Saddam's Sunni Muslim tribe of 1.5 million would be enraged over what they would consider the revenge killing of the former president by the Shiite-controlled and U.S.-sponsored government, Clark said.

Clark, 78, was attorney general under President Johnson despite opposing the Vietnam War and has been best known since for defending people with unpopular causes. Besides Saddam, he has worked with blind Egyptian cleric Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, a planner of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and American Indian activist Leonard Peltier, convicted in a 1975 gunfight at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in which two FBI agents died.

Saddam and the other defendants, who include his vice president, Taha Yassin Ramadan, are being tried for genocide in the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi Kurds during the late 1980s. They already have been tried for murder and torture in the deaths of 148 Iraqi Shiites from the Iraqi town of Dujail who allegedly conspired to kill Saddam in 1981.

The court that tried them was to have returned its verdict on Oct. 16, but it announced this week it will not do so. A new date was not set.

Clark said the defendants are at Camp Cropper near Baghdad's airport in a new $60 million detention center. The Army says it oversees about 13,000 prisoners in Iraq at Cropper, Camp Bucca in the southern desert and Fort  Suse in the Kurdish north.

The United States has said it transferred Saddam to Iraqi custody some time ago, but his whereabouts have not been divulged.

In March, an AP-Ipsos poll in the United States and several other countries found that two out of three Americans felt Saddam was getting a fair trial and if convicted should be executed. Lesser majorities in eight other countries polled said he was being tried fairly and should be jailed for life if convicted."

Now if an American expressed the desire to kill our President they would be jailed, while the Iranian President can say death to all Americans and get away with it.

The resolve of the American people in the end will dictate our future, while our present administration, headed by our nations second Bush has clearly paved out a road map to what he and others see as the course for our nation to proceed. To say one Bush was right and the other wrong and or both were either right or wrong with the cards dealt them is really a mute statement and now only history will decide our future based on present government policies.

Whether we should stay in Iraq until the Iraq government can assume their sovereign role over their territory, providing protection for their people through a strengthened Armed Forces is clearly in our best interest, yet if Iraq aligns itself with Iran in part do to regional and inner city security issues and or ideological and religious similarities between both countries, clearly the U. S. will have to decide if we should remain while at odds with Iran.

To pull out and abandon all hopes for a brighter future for not only countless millions of Iraq citizens who only desire to live in peace, not to mention the particulars clearly pointed out in the Coalition Provisional Authority Press Room in relationship to the many, many accomplishments achieved thus far in Iraq, but a stable region in the middle east is clearly in the best interest of the world.

Coalition Provisional Authority Press Room

http://cpa-iraq.org/pressreleases/index.html

As far as the Civil War theory, is it real or is it a myth? Clearly there are those who desire to rule in the presence of Iraq’s present democracy, which by the way has evolved into more freedoms then they had while the Baptist regime was in power and given time will most likely see greater freedoms of worship and civil liberties, liberties that are presently in place, yet many fear the bullies and assembly often results in terrorist attacks killing hundreds, thereby making it appear sometimes there are limited civil liberties when in reality there are, because thousands aren’t rallying and protesting or desecrating the dear departed at funeral ceremonies like Americans in our country are free to do.

Clearly if Iran partners with Iraq, all hopes of democracy would soon be squelched unless Iran recognizes Iraq’s sovereign right to become a democracy and while the Iraq’s President through his Foreign Minister recently sought out Iran’s assistance with security of his nation, full well knowing Iran is backing and funding insurgents within Iraq, illustrates that without the U. S. assistance until Iraq can stand on its own, will merely invite Iran to become even a greater influence in the affairs of Iraq. The Iraq and Iran 8 ½ year war plays a large role in the way the Iranians view the Iraq people and vises a versa.

Iran is clearly the largest threat facing world order and peace and the international community will once and for all have to deal with Iran’s defiance to Middle East stability.

Apologize for being in Iraq, when the country is so close to ultimate victory provided Iran is dealt with severally is ludicrous and to do so would dishonor those sacrificing their lives in the struggle against terror or fascism or both, dependant upon your point of view.

Who's to say it's not WWII all over gain. They learned there tactics from the Hitler party and they want to kill Jews, and dominate the world.

If the U. S. doesn’t have the resolve to kick Iran’s ass back to the stone ages where they presently are dwelling ideologically, then strengthening Iraq’s boarders preventing further insurgents, arms and funds from Iran is only prudent, yet if Iraq joins up with Iran in international quarters and inner city and regional security, then clearly we must rethink what were trying to accomplish.

I'm for fighting, not loosing, but Iran must be dealt with if were to win.

Iran has vowed to help Iraq with their security what ever that means.

When you kill a snake, you don't cut the tail off.

Where is the boarder navy flights making sure arms from Iran don't make it to Iraq?

Fight this dam war with all thy might or bring our troops home and protect the boarders of the U. S.

Clean out that city if you have to evacuate everyone house by house.

Get the job done.

Army Warns Rumsfeld It's Billions Short

An extraordinary action by the chief of staff sends a message: The Pentagon must increase the budget or reduce commitments in Iraq and elsewhere.

By Peter Spiegel, Times Staff Writer
September 25, 2006

About $400 billion has been appropriated for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars through emergency funding measures since Sept. 11, 2001, with the money divided among military branches and government agencies.

According to a senior Army official involved in budget talks, Schoomaker is now seeking $138.8 billion in 2008, nearly $25 billion above budget limits originally set by Rumsfeld. The Army's budget this year is $98.2 billion, making Schoomaker's request a 41% increase over current levels.

The Army, with an active-duty force of 504,000, has been stretched by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. About 400,000 have done at least one tour of combat duty, and more than a third of those have been deployed twice. Commanders have increasingly complained of the strain, saying last week that sustaining current levels will require more help from the National Guard and Reserve or an increase in the active-duty force. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-mi...ll=la-home-h eadlines

I'm behind our President and troops, but Iran must become more supportive toward world order and peace.

There are grave and great costs to war. That's why you must fight to win, and be as fast as you can about it, while being effective, which often takes time and as a result there is enduring hardships and grave sacrifices our servicemembers and those of coalition forces encounter.

According to a recent VA study, more than one-third of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans seeking medical treatment from the Veterans Administration report symptoms of stress or other mental disorders. This represents a tenfold increase in the last eighteen months. The dramatic jump in cases is causing concern among some veterans groups that VA may not be able to meet the demand.

Psychologists have said all deployed servicemembers will encounter stress during their deployments. Physical signs of stress may include upset stomach, vomiting, muscular contractions, sweating, shakiness, tension, disorientation, vision problems, hyperventilation, exhaustion, urinary frequency and diarrhea. Emotional signs of stress include feeling anxious or agitated, guilt, fear, anger, grief, general loss of emotional control, depression, emotional numbing, and feeling abandoned or lost. Seek professional help if you experience prolonged isolation from friends, anger, irritability, depression that does not decrease with time, frequent suicidal thoughts and alcohol or drug abuse.

Legislation Increases Dependents' Education Benefits

Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Rep. Steve Buyer (R-Ind.) recently introduced the Disabled Warriors’ Family Education Act of 2006. This bill will allow spouses and dependent children to access their Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance, under chapter 35 of title 38, United States Code, prior to the severely injured servicemember being discharged from active duty. Once the servicemember receives a VA rating stating that their injuries are permanent and total in nature the servicemember’s spouse and college-aged dependent children may begin their education during the servicemember’s convalescence period, which in some instances may be two years.

Hiring Heroes Paves Road to Jobs

In its second year, the Hiring Heroes program has helped more than 1,000 injured servicemembers and their families connect with potential employers. Hiring Heroes is co-sponsored by The Office of the Secretary of Defense, DoD’s Military Severely Injured Center and Monster.com, a networking hub for current and former military people, defense workers and their families. For more information about Hiring Heroes events, call Karen Hannah, Hiring Heroes program manager, at (88 363-4872 or e-mail her at Karen.Hannah@cpms.osd.mil .

Injury Insurance Surprise

The new Traumatic Injury Protection under Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (TSGLI) is still referred to as “Wounded Warrior Insurance” by proponents who pushed it through Congress last year with surprising speed. But for injuries incurred after Nov. 30, 2005, the phrase “wounded warrior” fails to capture the breadth of TSGLI. That is because any servicemember, active or reserve, who has Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and suffers a traumatic injury can be eligible for the trauma pay. I hope we can always endure to be compassionate and loving for one another, while it is difficult to understand why so many ruthless people throughout the world know not the love the Almighty speaks of or in his foot steps, our Lord Jesus Christ. I would much rather the world be at peace but as servants to our Lord and God the Father, we are duty bound to up hold the law set down by the Almighty, a struggle of good and evil, right and wrong, that through his mercy we should know our Lord Jesus father, the creator of the universe. When I exclaim the might of Iran’s military must be destroyed, I seek not revenge nor am I uncompassionate to the many that would perish in a war primly consisting of missiles and bombs, yet I must defend the principles set down by our creator and a free society until our Lord Jesus establishes his rule and Kingdom on earth. No one or country ruled by anyone has the right to kill me because of my beliefs or force me to follow there ideological views and while I won't force anyone to believe my views I will fight to keep them.

While we wait, Iran becomes stronger and more countries gather to her side witnessing the U. S. resolve to fight the war on terror but no military action other then operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unless our government does something soon, within a matter of 6-months or less, Iran will have a reactor on line.

Iran has been identified as the world’s leading state sponsor of international terrorism, funding Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and Hamas, as well as Shiite insurgent groups, Iran is even recruiting its youth and students across the Middle East for suicide operations against Western targets.

Religious extremism, particularly Islamic fundamentalism, is one of the key dangers in the world today. The Iranian President is a religious extremist who believes that it is his destiny to trigger a period of chaos, war and bloodshed in order for Islam to dominate the world.

Nuclear proliferation is one of the greatest dangers to world peace. We must act to stop Iran before it can develop nuclear technology, because the Iranian President has said that he would share nuclear technology with other Muslims.

The President of Iran believes that he is creating an Islamic “superpower,” which will bring down the West, including the United States. He says that he will have hundreds of millions of Muslim “holy raiders” eager to become martyrs.

The Iranian President does not believe the Holocaust happened and has called for the destruction of Israel. If we do not act, we run the risk of placating an extremist and making the same mistake we made with Hitler, which led to World War II and the deaths of millions.

The U.S. and Iran: Democracy, Terrorism, and Nuclear Weapons
Stephen Zunes July 26, 2005

The election of the hard-line Teheran mayor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, over former President Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani as the new head of Iran is undeniably a setback for those hoping to advance greater social and political freedom in that country. It should not necessarily be seen as a turn to the right by the Iranian electorate, however. The 70-year old Rafsanjani—a cleric and penultimate wheeler-dealer from the political establishment—was portrayed as the more moderate conservative. The fact that he had become a millionaire while in government was apparently seen as less important than his modest reform agenda. By contrast, the young Teheran mayor focused on the plight of the poor and cleaning up corruption.

In Iran, real political power rests with unelected military, economic, and right-wing ideologues, and in the June 25 runoff election, Iranian voters were forced to choose between two flawed candidates. The relatively liberal contender came across as an out-of-touch elitist, and his ultraconservative opponent was able to assemble a coalition of rural, less-educated, and fundamentalist voters to conduct a pseudopopulist campaign based on promoting morality and value-centered leadership. Such a political climate should not be unfamiliar to American voters.

Washington’s primary criticisms of Teheran focus on the Iranian government’s suppression of political freedom, its support for terrorism and subversion, and its nuclear program.

I don't like the way this article was written, but these facts shuld remind us as to who were dealing with.

TOTAL'S CONTRACT WITH IRAN: A CHALLENGE TO 'PAX AMERICANA'?

The announcement on Sunday by the French energy company, Total, that a consortium it leads had signed a $2-billion contract with Iran to develop a major gas field in the Persian Gulf moved editors in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America to conclude that a "major confrontation" was in the making between the U.S. and the EU over trade sanctions against Iran.

At issue are sanctions outlined in the 1996 Iran-Libya Sanctions Act--also referred to as the D'Amato act-- which would require President Clinton to impose sanctions on any foreign country investing more than $40 million a year in Iran or Libya's energy industries. Paris's right-of-center Le Figaro predicted a particularly dire situation:

"Between the U.S. and Europe, we are in for a war with commercial and political repercussions." A majority of commentators focused on what they said was the "center of the debate": international objection to what they perceived as the U.S.' imposition of "extra-territorial" legislation in contravention of international laws of commerce. Without exception, analysts railed against what they saw as U.S. attempts to "legislate to the world." "The arrogance with which the U.S. tramples on international law and the WTO...cannot be accepted," intoned left-of-center Frankfurter Rundschau. A number of observers saw in the French-led consortium's deal-making with Iran a challenge to the world's remaining superpower and its "Pax Americana." Moscow's reformist, business-oriented Kommersant Daily judged that "suddenly”, both Europe and Russia [are] flaunting their independence from the Americans. America's striving for domination does not endear it to Europe and prompts the Europeans to form a united opposition front."

In Cairo, pro-government Al-Ahram contended that the French company's move "took courage" and that this "French defiance should be an example to all countries" that must deal with America. One daily in Islamabad implored Muslims the world over to "take a unified action...to reject U.S. extra-territorial legislation on Muslim and non-Muslim countries alike." A few media voices targeted their criticism at more than just the U.S., seeing "opportunism" as the deciding factor for all nations--including the Europeans--as they pursue their foreign policy and economic agendas.

Other commentators examined the possible courses President Clinton might take to head off a full-fledged "trade war" between the U.S. and the EU over Iran. Many agreed with Paris's right-of-center Le Figarothat this was the dilemma facing the U.S. president: "To punish Total means to enter into a major crisis with Europe.... To do nothing would mean recognizing America's weakness." A number of analysts joined London's liberal Guardian in its call for "calm diplomacy" and compromise between the trading partners. Several pundits held out hope that a solution would be forth coming. Others, however, were far less sanguine. Ankara's pro-Islamic Zaman, for example, insisted that America will not bend on its policy toward Iran.

Only a minority of observers addressed what one referred to as "the main question: What to do with Iran, which is suspected of being involved in terrorism?" A few, concluding that the U.S. policy of isolating Iran has been a "failure," endorsed the EU's "critical dialogue" policy of limited engagement with Tehran. But more acknowledged that really "nobody knows how to deal with a provocative state like Iran that challenges the international community."

This survey was based on 42 reports from 18 countries, Sept 29-Oct 3.

Iran leader warns West on support of Israel

"Ahmadinejad repeated that Iran would not give in to international demands to suspend its uranium enrichment program, and dismissed efforts at the United Nations to impose sanctions on Iran."

Iranian leader threatens Israel's allies

"Ahmadinejad called the U.N. Security Council and all its decisions "illegitimate" and said the world body was being used as a tool of Iran's enemies — the United States and Britain.

"Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned that Iran would have "a price to pay" if it does not give up its nuclear ambitions — and hinted Israel might be forced to take action.

He did not specifically threaten to cripple Iran's nuclear program with a military strike, as Israel did 25 years ago in Iraq when it sent combat planes to destroy an unfinished nuclear reactor. But Olmert, en route home from a three-day trip to Moscow, said Thursday the Iranians should "be afraid" of the consequences of their defiance.

"They have to understand that if they object to every compromise, there will be a price to pay," he said.

On Friday, Israel's army chief, Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz, said Israel cannot ignore the threat of a nuclear Iran. "This combination of nuclear weapons and an extreme regime which has the clear goal of destroying Israel is a combination to which we cannot remain indifferent," Halutz said."

And now it begins:

A top European Union negotiator said Wednesday that "endless hours" of talks with Iran about its nuclear program have failed to make any progress, while the Iranian president said U.N. sanctions would not stop Tehran from enriching uranium.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said the international community would have no choice but to impose sanctions if Iran refused to stop enrichment. A British official said world powers were starting to draft a U.N. resolution.

He urged Iran to continue the talks to prevent the threat of U.N. sanctions, now being considered by the U.N. Security Council's five permanent members.

I'm glad to see this:

Solana has been leading negotiations with Larijani on behalf of Britain, France, Germany, China, the United States and Russia, which are seeking to persuade Iran to suspend work on processing uranium in return for a package of incentives.

"The international community is running out of time because soon its own credibility in terms of enforcing its own resolutions will be... a matter of question," said US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

I SURE HOPE HE CHANGES HIS MIND:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned the West that sanctions would not stop his government from uranium enrichment.

"You are mistaken if you assume that the Iranian nation will stop for even a moment from the path toward using nuclear energy due to your nagging," he told supporters, drawing chants of "Death to America!" from a crowd in Hashtgerd, outside the Iranian capital, Tehran.

"It's been 27 years that they (the West) haven't allowed us to use technologies that they possess," Ahmadinejad said. "This nation is powerful and won't give in to one iota of coercion."

Iran’s predetermined plan too secure their nuclear technology program

Iran’s predetermined plan too secure their nuclear technology program and advancement was well thought out, and a pretty good strategy, and from what I can see, as far back as 2002, which was and is to align their economy with foreign investment and gain international support because know country, Banks or the World Bank wants to loose there investment or loose out on the opportunity of an investment.

Furthermore, countries throughout the region and as far as South America desire to participate in foreign investment within Iran.

Economic sanctions by the U. S. when there are no U. S. businesses doing business in Iran won’t affect Iran/U. S. investment, while not knowing Iran’s export of products to the U. S., my guess is they presently export to countries that in turn export products to the U. S. and with some research I guess I could find out how much oil of Iran’s is actually making it to the U. S. via various open markets and brokers, oil companies, etc.

Clearly foreign investment in Iran by countries throughout the world is presently the U. S. largest obstacle in relationship to implementing U. S. Policy with the United Nations and our nation’s allies.

Also, the need for growing economies in those countries in the middle east requiring oil, natural gas, etc. will increasing impact on global realities and it is my belief that Iran believes international pressure will increase against U. S., policies causing the U. S. to weaken there present hard line stance toward Iran’s advancing nuclear technology program, resulting in one of four or possibly two concurrent results of consequences from Iran’s resolve:

Iran agrees to the U. S. Inspection program of nuclear energy related technologies and halt goals of enrichment of uranium;

Iran continues their Nuclear Technologies program uninhibited by the U. S. and international community;

Economic sanctions by the U. S. and a reluctant international community, in which many countries will not take part and or

These days you must review every aspect of the issues affecting our lives and those effecting our nations and nations of the world in order to understand the world we live in. At the highest levels of government, decisions that effect rather complicated polices must consider every consequence for any action.

Today I read as many articles as I could, around thirty I guess and compiled some interesting links together and I feel I can make a few comments without stumbling.

Iranian bloggers are presenting a wide range of view points from supporting Liberty and Freedom to condemning both Israel for their military response to the kidnapping of two soldiers to Iran’s involvement backing Hezbollah.

The Iranian Press and news agencies are not allowed to report world wide reactions or openly discuss the issues of Iran’s Nuclear Energy Policies, a firm fist of censorship by the Iran government.

If every Iranian had a computer and a blog or access to the net, then there would be more informed Iran citizens. Is the resolve of the Iranian people greater then we expected

Calculating the Risk of War in Iran
by F. William Engdahl

The basic facts - January 29, 2006 - GlobalResearch.ca

First the basic facts as can be verified. The act by Iran’s President, Ahmadinejad, announcing the resumption of suspended work on completing a nuclear fuel enrichment facility along with two other facilities at Natanz, sounded louder alarm bells outside Iran than his inflammatory anti-Israel rhetoric earlier, understandably so. Mohamed El Baradei, Nobel Peace prize winning head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN body, has said he is not sure if that act implies a nuclear weapons program, or whether Iran is merely determined not to be dependent on outside powers for its own civilian nuclear fuel cycle. But, he added, the evidence for it is stronger than that against Saddam Hussein, a rather strong statement by the usually cautious El Baradei.

The result of the resumption of research at Natanz appears to have jelled for the first time, a coalition between USA and the EU, including Germany and France, with China and even Russia, now joining in urging Iran to desist. Last August President George Bush announced, in regard to Iran’s announced plans to resume enrichment regardless of international opinion, that ‘all options are on the table.’ That implied in context a nuclear strike on Iranian nuclear sites. That statement led to a sharp acceleration of EU diplomatic efforts, led by Britain, Germany and France, the so-called EU-3, to avoid a war. The three told Washington they were opposed to a military solution. Since then we are told by Der Spiegel and others the EU view has changed to appear to come closer to the position of the Bush Administration.

It’s useful briefly to review the technology of nuclear fuel enrichment. To prepare uranium for use in a nuclear reactor, it undergoes the steps of mining and milling, conversion, enrichment and fuel fabrication. These four steps make up the 'front end' of the nuclear fuel cycle.

After uranium has been used in a reactor to produce electricity it is known as 'spent fuel,' and may undergo further steps including temporary storage, reprocessing, and recycling before eventual disposal as waste. Collectively these steps are known as the 'back end' of the fuel cycle.

The Natanz facility is part of the ‘front end’ or fuel preparation cycle. Ore is first milled into Uranium Oxide (U³O , or ‘yellowcake,’ then converted into Uranium Hexaflouride (UF6) gas. The Uranium Hexaflouride then is sent to an enrichment facility, in this case Natanz, to produce a mix containing 3-4% of fissile U235, a non-weapons-grade nuclear fuel. So far, so good more or less in terms of weapons danger.

Iran is especially positioned through geological fortune to possess large quantities of uranium from mines in Yazd Province, permitting Iran to be self-sufficient in fuel and not having to rely on Russian fuel or any other foreign imports for that matter. It also has a facility at Arak which produces heavy water, which is used to moderate a research reactor whose construction began in 2004. That reactor will use uranium dioxide and could enable Iran to produce weapons grade plutonium which some nuclear scientists estimate could produce an amount to build one to two nuclear devices per year. Iran officially claims the plant is for peaceful medical research. The peaceful argument here begins to look thinner.

Nuclear enrichment is no small item. You don’t build such a facility in the backyard or the garage. France’s large Tricastin enrichment facility provides fuel for the nuclear electricity grid of EdF, as well as for the French nuclear weapons program. It needs four large nuclear reactors, just to provide over 3000 MWe power for it. Early US enrichment plants used gaseous diffusion. Enrichment plants in EU and Russia use a more modern centrifuge process that uses far less energy per unit of enrichment. The latter or centrifuge process is also the Iranian type.

To make weapons grade Uranium requires more than conventional civilian electric power grade uranium fuel.

‘Unmaking’ weapons grade uranium today is also a geopolitically interesting process, not irrelevant to the current dispute over Iran. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, under agreements designed to insure that the Soviet nuclear arsenal would be converted to peaceful uses, military weapons uranium came on to the civilian market under a US-Russian agreement.

Today more than half of all the uranium used for electricity in the USA nuclear power plants comes from Russian military stockpiles. Currently 20% of all electricity produced in the US is nuclear generated meaning that Russian uranium fuels some 10% of all US electricity.

In 1994 a $12 billion contract was signed between the US Enrichment Corporation (now USEC Inc) and Russia's Techsnabexport (Tenex) as agents for the US and Russian governments. USEC agreed to buy a minimum of 500 tonnes of weapons-grade uranium over 20 years, at a rate of up to 30 tonnes/year beginning 1999. The uranium is blended down to 4.4% U-235 in Russia. The USEC then sells it to its US power utility customers as fuel. In September 2005 this program reached its halfway point of 250 tonnes or elimination of 10,000 nuclear warheads.

Worldwide, one sixth of the global market of commercial enriched uranium is supplied by Russia from Russian and other weapons-grade uranium stocks. Putin has many cards to play in the showdown over Iran’s nuclear program.

The issue of whether Iran was secretly building a nuclear weapon capability first surfaced from allegations by an Iranian exile opposition group in 2002.

Natanz has been under IAEA agency purview since suspicions about Iran’s activities surfaced. It was prompted by reports from an Iranian opposition organization, National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and led IAEA head Mohamed El Baradei to tour Iran’s nuclear facilities in February 2002, including the incomplete plant in that city of Natanz about 300 miles south of Tehran. The NCRI is the political arm of the controversial People's Mujahedeen of Iran, which both EU and US governments officially brand terrorist but unofficially work with increasingly against the Teheran theocracy. - Possible Iranian strategy - The Israeli options - The Russian factor in Iran  - The China factor in Iran - EU relations with Iran - The Bush Administration role in Iran - AIPAC and Abramoff impact Washington - CONPLAN 8022 - Geopolitical risks of nuclear war - At that point there are several possible outcomes

Destroy Iran’s Might and prevent a depression and save lives, and I don't mean NUKE EM. The fact is, if we don't do something quickly our nation will bankrupt itself. Our dependence on oil, Iran's threat to the world in which were part of last time I checked demands quick action. The government of Iran must go, there military might destroyed by our 41 subs deployed and lets bring our troops home once the insurgents find themselves without funds to rearm. There are a 1,000 reasons to do away with the government of Iran and there mlitary might and then let there 70-million minus a million people spend the next twenty years rebuilding a peaceful society and if they don't, well in 2046 will give em another round. The fact is, that when Iran one day transports spint fuel and sludges to Russia, they will be highjacked, there will be a dirty bomb in the hands of those that want us dead and the world to end.

As I see it a deck has five cards, insurgents backed by Iran used there Jack to open, when they spent 6 years arming, killing, kidnapping solders and launching rockets.

Iran's first Ace appeared when the head of those critters wasn't killed

Second Ace appeared when a Cease Fire commenced without disarming those critters, giving them a chance at there own government spreading hate and discontent.

Third Ace - NUKES - cancel enrichment and prove it and we will go back to two Aces and if they want to keep the first Ace alive, they will have to be peaceful working on the second Ace.

Until the 31st its high stakes poker, because the fourth Ace means Iran wins a prize.............

Bush brands Iran leader a 'tyrant' (Rightfully so, I think)

Bush brands Iran leader a 'tyrant'  - Sep 5, 2006 yahoo news, AFP

US President George W. Bush branded Iran's president a tyrant and compared leaders in Tehran to Al-Qaeda terrorists who cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. "America will not bow down to tyrants," he said in the second of a series of election-year speeches defending his handling of the war on terrorism and Iraq. "The world's free nations will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon." Bush accused Iran of funding the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah and other groups "to attack Israel and America by proxy" and said Hezbollah was second only to Al-Qaeda in the number of US citizens it has killed.
"Like Al-Qaeda and the Sunni extremists, the Iranian regime has clear aims. They want to drive America out of the region, to destroy Israel, and to
dominate the broader Middle East," said the US president.

But, he said, Shiite extremists have done something Al-Qaeda only dreams of by taking over Iran in 1979, "subjugating its proud people to a regime of
tyranny and using that nation's resources to fund the spread of terror and to pursue their radical agenda."

"The Iranian regime and its terrorist proxies have demonstrated their willingness to kill Americans, and now the Iranian regime is pursuing
nuclear weapons," said Bush.

The US president quoted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying, in an August 15 speech, "If you would like to have good relations with the Iranian nation in the future, bow down before the greatness of the Iranian nation and surrender."

"If you don't accept to do this, the Iranian nation will force you to surrender and bow down," he quoted the Iranian leader as saying.

"America will not bow down to tyrants," he replied.

"Like Al-Qaeda and the Sunni extremists, the Iranian regime has clear aims. They want to drive America out of the region, to destroy Israel, and to
dominate the broader Middle East," said the US president.

NOT JUST DRIVE US OUT, BUT DESTROY US, AND TURN US INTO MUSLIMS ! THIS HAS TO BE STOPED !

With Iraq seeking Iran's security help makes me think we need to bring our soldiers home. I guess if you can't stop em over there, you must join them so you can at least have one side stronger then the other in their Civil War.

What are we doing? Iraq is basically back stabbing us or maybe it's not our problem. It could be the biggest bully on the block should rule the bullies in the Middle East. I'm for blowing up Iran’s Nuclear Reactors in route from Russia on Iran's soil before they are installed. If that pisses them off, then their military is next.

Sanctions are a joke. They don't need to transport oil over the high seas to China or Russia and they can sell anything on the Internet, using any form of shipping.

We need to decide once and for all are we going to fight the war on terror or not? Because if were not, then bring or soldiers home, strengthen our boarders (300 mile fence verses 2,000-miles is another joke), bunker in and help our allies by providing SUB and B 52 Bomber support and fighters from 9 carriersTHEY will still end up with a dirty bomb. What a drag. The worlds future in Irans hands

There was a time I too was peaceful in regards to Iran, a country bent on destroying anyone who stands in there way or maybe they will stop at Israel if the U. S. abandonees our brothers and sisters for the better good of the Middle East as the Iran Presidents states.

Maybe it's time to mind our own business and show the world we don't need there oil by once and for all becoming independent and it can be done. A few examples at the end of this Thread and or check out EQNEEDF Renewable Energy Letter or Independence from Middle East Oil.:

EQNEEDF RENEWABLE ENERGY LETTER http://community.fox6.com/forums/thread/761121.aspx

Independence from Middle East Oil through expanded Renewable Energy Technologies http://community.fox6.com/forums/thread/876199.aspx

Heck Americas for sale, anyway Chinas got a big peace. Our country likes throwing money away, lets buy those Russia Reactors their selling to Iran. On second thought, wouldn't it be cheaper to just wait tell they trasport it and either highjack it or blow it up.

Maybe we can let Iran have world inspectors observe the transit of the spent fule and the sludges from the metals they will one day use developing space age products and the like.

We got a lot of problems. Those there critters only know tuff love I'm afraid to say.

These guys ain't got no guns:

The group of six say they will hold off on any action until after an August 31 report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), that will judge whether Iran has halted enrichment-related activity or not.

Big mistake - once the door opens, light gets heavy, advancement, larger plants, etc. spint fuel is spint fuel, light or heavy, its highly containmated waste
World powers have offered Iran light water reactors and a guaranteed supply of nuclear fuel in return for a halt to its sensitive enrichment and reprocessing activities.

But Iran says as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) it has a right to nuclear enrichment and to produce its own fuel.

The heavy water reactor's plutonium by-product can be used for making atomic warheads but Iran insists its nuclear programme is purely peaceful and aimed only at generating energy.

Unlike light water plants, heavy water reactors do not need enriched uranium fuel in order to function. But even in a light water electricity plant the uranium need only be enriched to 3.5-5 percent, well short of the level needed to produce a nuclear bomb.

Another target I guess

Iran's first nuclear power plant is currently under construction with Russian help in the south and it is expected to be operational by the end of 2007.

The million dollar question. Will Russia Back there play. The Russia guy on tv said "We can sell weapons to anyone we want just like the US does" and when asked, Will we be at war with Russia one day, "No"

That shows you we could buy them off.

Think about it, it would have been cheaper if we bougth that 3.6 billion 53 helicoper pacakage in stead of our south america enemy.

Buy the Russians off and Destroy the threat.

MILITARY TARGETS AS I SEE IT:

The international concerns about Iran’s nuclear weapons program has largely arisen from Jafarzadeh’s stunning revelations about 7 major previously secret nuclear sites, including the sites in Natanz, Arak, Karaj, Ab-Ali, and Tehran.

Jafarzadeh revealed the existence of Natanz uranium enrichment facility, and Arak's
heavy water facility in August 2002, Ab-Ali centrifuge testing facility near Tehran in February 2003, two additional nuclear sites near Karaj in May 2003, and two other new nuclear sites in Kolahdouz military complex in Tehran, and Ardekan in July 2003. He unveiled the details of Iran’s development of bio-weapons in May 2003, and had previously provided valuable information about the Shahab-3 medium range missile.

On April 27, 2004, Jafarzadeh revealed information that Iran, using some 400 nuclear experts, is now running a secret nuclear weapons program supervised by the military and the Supreme Leader parallel to their overt nuclear energy program. Jafarzadeh had previously unveiled in March, a secret meeting held earlier by Iran’s senior officials where they decided to speed up their nuclear weapons program, while faking cooperation with the IAEA.

March 24, 2005, Jafarzadeh revealed that Iran has actually built a secret underground facility in Tehran’s Parchin military complex where activities related to laser enrichment is carried out.

While you are reading this, the Iranian reactor produces enriched bomb-grade uranium. Terrorists can deliver that bomb to your city, and it can kill you and your children. Yet the government does nothing.

Do we demand violence? Not in any common sense. Similarly, police use force to arrest criminals in order to stop violence.

But Iran is not a criminal? Wrong. Iran has proven malicious intent. Iran, under the current regime, conducted many terrorist bombings in the West, and sponsors deadly terrorists. Iranian leaders repeatedly called for fight against the United States and annihilation of Israel.

Perhaps Iran needs nuclear weapons for self-defense? No. Iran already bullies the Middle East with its huge conventional army. No country threatens Iran.

Since the eighth-century jihad and the Ottoman army at the gates of Vienna, the West has never been exposed to such threat. Iran’s several nuclear bombs can inflict more damage on America than the World War II. Never before the Islamic fundamentalists who hate the West and dream of attacking it had military might of apocalyptic dimensions. Are you crazy to doubt they will use the bomb?

We call on the United States: Do not hesitate. Protect your people. Protect your allies. Destroy the Iranian reactor!

Rice warns world time running out on Iran’s nuclear issue

US Secretary of State warns international community’s credibility will be matter of question.

By Sylvie Lanteaume – CAIRO

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned here Tuesday that time was running out for the international community if it did not want to lose credibility over the Iranian nuclear problem.

"I hope that there is still room to resolve this," said Rice who is due to take part in a week-end ministerial meeting of the six countries involved in the discussions on Iran's nuclear threat.

"But the international community is running out of time because soon its own credibility in terms of enforcing its own resolutions will be (...) a matter of question," said Rice, who is pressing for sanctions.

The European Union's foreign policy supremo Javier Solana and Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani wound up their third series of meetings last week saying simply that "progress" had been made and agreeing to a fresh "contact" this week.

But Washington warned that the United States would give European negotiators until the end of the week to convince Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program, and then pursue sanctions if Tehran fails to comply.

Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns, the State Department's point man on Iran, told The Washington Times that the final round of talks scheduled this week between Solana and Larijani should bring "clarity."

"If Iran's answer is maybe, it's a no," Burns was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

Rice agreed to requests from her counterparts from the other four permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany last month to give the Solana-Larijani talks more time before turning to sanctions, on which Russia and China and to a lesser degree France have expressed reservations.

But the so-called P5-plus-1 nations agreed to set a new deadline this week for Iran to comply with an earlier UN resolution demanding it freeze its uranium enrichment program, which Washington and others believe is a cover for developing nuclear weapons.

"I know that the six parties are committed to the logic of Resolution 1696 or they wouldn't have voted for it," Rice said.

UN Security Council Resolution 1696, adopted at the end of July, gave Tehran until the end of August to suspend enrichment or face sanctions.

Asked about Iran's latest proposal that France should create a consortium to produce enriched uranium on Iranian territory enabling surveillance of Tehran's nuclear activities, Rice dismissed it as an "old idea."

"The idea of a consortium is actually an old idea. It has been around for a while and the Iranians have floated it before. There is a consortium idea that the United States supports, which is the consortium (...) that Russia has proposed, which would be a joint venture but with no enrichment and reprocessing on Iranian soil," she said.

"I fear that this may instead, therefore, be a stalling technique because we don't want to get to the basic issue which is that Iran has to suspend its enrichment and reprocessing in order to begin negotiations," Rice said.

A top Iranian official had said Tuesday the crisis could be resolved if France created a consortium to produce enriched uranium on Iranian soil, a proposal that stops short of Western demands Tehran suspends the sensitive nuclear activity.

"The best solution to dispel the worries about Iran's nuclear activities is not to demand a suspension" of enrichment, the deputy head of Iran's atomic energy organisation, Mohammad Saeedi, said.

"We have an idea that technically and legally is the best solution.

"It is that France creates a consortium with Eurodif and Areva to carry out enrichment in Iran and thus they can closely monitor our nuclear programme," he added, referring to France's enrichment specialist and its parent company.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste Blazy said the proposal could only be taken into consideration "after Iran suspends its uranium activities".

Iran Defiant As Deadline Looms

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060820/ts_afp/irannuclearpolitics_060820 124059

Iran test-fired a short-range missile in a demonstration of its "readiness to respond to any threat," state television reported.

The upgraged surface-to-surface missile, called Saegheh or lightning in Farsi, has a range of between 80 and 250 kilometers (50 and 155 miles).

Massive military exercises began Saturday with the aim of testing new weapons and tactics against a potential enemy.

Twelve army divisions along with air and naval forces and missile units are involved in the military operation, named "Zolfaghar Blow" after the two-point sword of Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Mohammed.

"The enemy has gone insane because of the capabilities of Lebanon's Hezbollah," army chief Major General Ataollah Salehi was quoted as saying by official news agency IRNA Saturday, referring to the Shiite group which was locked in a 34-day conflict with Israel under a ceasefire last week.

Egypt warns against any military strike on Iran

Sat Aug 19, 6:32 AM ET

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak warned against any military strike on
Iran in an interview published on Saturday.

The United Nations Security Council has demanded Iran suspend uranium enrichment by the end of the month after Tehran failed to persuade the international community its atomic scientists were working on power stations, not bombs.

Washington has declined to rule out military strikes as a solution to the nuclear dispute.

"The conflict between the United States and Iran must be resolved through diplomatic channels and direct dialogue, because any strike on Iran means the end of stability in the region and the world," Mubarak said in an interview published on Saturday in Egypt's Akhbar al-Youm newspaper.

Iran has set itself an August 22 deadline to respond to an offer of economic incentives designed to persuade it to comply with the suspension demand.

Egypt has not had full diplomatic relations with Tehran in more than 25 years and high-level contacts are rare, usually limited to international meetings. But Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki came to Egypt last week for talks with Mubarak on the conflict in Lebanon and other regional issues.

In April, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit received a telephone call from Mottaki on the nuclear issue, and the ministers agreed to stay in touch.

"Iran is an important country in the region, and relations between countries are governed by pacts and treaties and agreements that prohibit interference in any internal matters of the countries," Mubarak said in the interview.

Egypt, one of 35 countries on the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency, says it is against any nuclear weapons in the Middle East, but wants the dispute resolved peacefully.

Relations between Egypt and Iran were severed when Cairo gave refuge to the deposed Shah of Iran, who died in Egypt. Over the years, the Egyptian government has repeatedly accused Iran of supporting underground Islamist groups.

Iran’s Army

Iran has become the third country in the Middle East to build main battle tanks (MBTs). Until recently, Israel was the only country in the area able to build an MBT, with its Merkava. Egypt has also begun building the US General Dynamics Land Systems M1A1 MBT. The army's aviation unit, whose main operational facilities were located at Esfahan, was largely equipped with United States aircraft, although some helicopters were of Italian manufacture. In 1986 army aviation operated some 65 light fixed-wing aircraft, but its strength lay in its estimated 320 combat helicopters, down from 720 in 1980. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/army.htm

MILNET Brief - The Iranian Conventional Forces - 2/18/2005

"Iran is now the only regional military power that poses a significant conventional military threat to Gulf stability.  Iran has significant capabilities for asymmetric warfare, and poses the additional threat of proliferation.  There is considerable evidence that it is developing both a long-range missile force and a range of weapons of mass destruction.  It has never properly declared its holdings of chemical weapons, and the status of its biological weapons programs is unknown.  The discoveries made by the IAEA since 2002 indicate that it is likely Iran will continue to covertly seek nuclear weapons."

Iran has some 540,000 men under arms and over 350,000 reserves.  They include 120,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards trained fro land and naval asymmetrical warfare.  Iran's military also includes holdings of 1,613 main battle tanks, 21,600 other armored fighting vehicles, 3,200 artillery weapons, 306 combat aircraft, 60 attack helicopters, 3 submarines, 59 surface combatants, and 10 amphibious ships."

Iranian Military

The Iranian Navy has some 18,000 men. According to the IISS, this total includes a two brigade marine force of some 2,600 men and a 2,000-man naval aviation force. It has bases at Bandar-e Abbas, Bushehr, Kharg Island, Bander-e Anzelli, Chah Bahar, Bander-e Mahshahar, and Bander-e Khomeini. This gives it bases opposing most of the Saudi coast. It has 3 submarines, 3 frigates, 2 corvettes, 10 missile patrol craft, 7 mine warfare ships, 44 coastal and inshore patrol craft, and 9-10 amphibious ships. Its naval aviation branch is one of the few air elements in any Gulf Navy, and has 5 maritime patrol aircraft, and 19 armed helicopters. When combined with the IRGC naval branch, this is a total maritime strength of 38,000 men with significant capabilities for both regular naval and asymmetric naval warfare.

The Russian Kilo Class submarine first entered service in the early 1980's. It was designed by the Rubin Central Maritime Design Bureau, St Petersburg. Subsequent developments have led to the current production versions, the Type 877EKM and most recently, Type 636. The submarines are constructed at the Admiralty Shipyard in St Petersburg. 24 Kilo Class submarines are in service in the Russian Navy (most of the older designs). They have also been exported to Iran, China, India, Poland, Romania and Algeria. China has two Type 877EKM, Iran has three Type 877EKM and India has ten Type 877EKM (Sindughosh Class). The Type 877EKM is designed for anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface ship (ASuW) warfare.

Non-Nuclear Submarines

A submarine of Project 877 embodies one of the most successful series in non-nuclear submarine shipbuilding of the end of the XX century. Export modifications - projects 877E and 877EKM - were designed based on this submarine. The most advance engineering solutions of that time and available experience of operation of export modifications of submarines of Project 641 (Foxtrot) (I641, I641K) in various regions of the World ocean were implemented in these submarines.

Iran: Stealth 'Flying Boat' Successfully Tested - Tuesday, April 04, 2006

The new surface-to-sea missile is equipped with remote-control and searching systems, the state-run television reported Tuesday.

Ballistic Missiles

Other land attack missiles are of great concern as well, Iran fielding a total of three SCUD derivatives and 2 more longer range missiles on the way.

http://www.iranfocus.com/uploads/img44314f2f38282.jpg

The following diagram from the 2001 U.S. report on non-proliferation demonstrates the ballistic missile capability of Iran:

 Land Forces
The CSIS report cites these numbers for Tanks in the Iranian Army:

 150 M-47/48; 150-160 M-60A1; 100 Chieftain Mark 3/5s; 250 T-54/55; 150-250 T-59; 480 T-72/S; 150-250 T-69II and 100 Zulfiqar = 1600 estimated

In terms of other land forces that include armored infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, Iran is fairly significant.

Iran - 865 Armored Personnel Carriers and 670 Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs)

Israel - 9480 Armored Personnel Carriers and 400 Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs)

Air Forces

The Iranian air forces are well aged and in poor maintenance.  While mechanical units can be repaired with indigenous labor, Iranian ability to remanufacture avionics is limited.  This does not keep them from trying.  However, it is the CSIS assessment (and that of MILNET's sources) that the Iranian Air Force is less than functional.

Other CSIS data supports the fact that Iran has increased their modern aircraft numbers significantly since 1996.  From some 290 fighter/attack aircraft in inventory, the air force increased their planes by some 130+, all fairly modern and capable.  The Iranians have also added a small number (12) attack helicopters, and have plenty more on order.

The CSIS report is actually a little unclear on the actual numbers of aircraft, their notation for the numbers of aircraft in a squadron differs in the same paragraph and we have a hard time "pulling out" the numbers.  For instance in one paragraph the data reads

"Iran has seven air defense squadrons, with 2/20-25, -60 U.S. supplied F-14..."

The total could be up to to 50 F-14, but the "-60" is indecipherable unless this is some foreign export version called the "-60"?  In any case, the U.S. aircraft in inventory are very poorly maintained, and the CSIS report also states that the Iranians have not been able to fly with Phoenix missiles since high tech materials required to keep them running have been exhausted and the U.S. has seen to it that Iran has not been able to procure replacements.

There is an effort to develop an indigenous aircraft but that does not appear to be viable yet, as are Iranian attempts to license and build MIG-29s. They have purchased two squadrons of the MIG-29s, very capable aircraft, however, any adversary would simply draw them off and go around these two squadrons, probably to face far inferior aircraft in their stead.

One troublesome aspect to Iranian aircraft procurement is the purchase of enough Chinese F-7M aircraft to fill a squadron. These are fairly capable aircraft for the region.

50 F-14 (Air Defense) - Poorly maintained, Little/no AAM, gun only;

6 MiG-29 (Air Defense) - Highly capable, heavy maintenance costs, fuel hungry;

35 F-7M (Air Defense) - Fairly modern and capable;

260 F-4D/E (Attack/Defense) - Very poorly maintained, parts not available to Iran some in ME market;

260 F-5E/FII (Attack Defense) - Very poorly maintained, parts not available from U.S., some in ME market;

30 Su-24 (Attack) - Some parts purchases with Russia have taken place, these may be the best maintained of all Iranian aircraft;

7 Su-25K (Attack) - Seized during Gulf War (Iraq inexplictedly flew them out). May be operational but doubtful and

24 Mir F-1 (Attack/Defense) - Seized during Gulf War (Iraq inexplictedly flew them out)
May be operational but doubtful

The MILNET assessment is that the aircraft, while theoretically capable (especially in the case of the MiG-29 and F-14) are probably not maintained well enough and their pilots may lack the necessary combat skills in order to adequately pose a serious threat to their neighbors.  HOWEVER, having said that, it does not take a lot of skill to let loose an airborne cruise missile upon shipping in the Persian Gulf.  Thus the threat is perhaps in the direction of the water, rather than inland.  In another report, MILNET looks at how to
directly attack Iran in order to take out nuclear reactors and other nuclear development facilities.  In that analysis, we purposely assumed that if the Iranians were to put up an aircraft borne defense, it would serve the purpose of the attacking force to remove them from the picture, quickly and efficiently, and with only minimal losses.  It would serve both  to eliminate that airborne air defense as well as to "pull any remaining teeth" from the Iranian Air Force, and would therefore be welcomed strategically.

Middle East Perspectives - March 15, 2006

An acknowledged Middle East expert, dynamic speaker, author of "Ally to Adversary - An Eyewitness Account of Iraq's Fall from Grace," and NBC News Middle East military analyst, retired intelligence officer Lt Col Rick Francona offers his thoughts and opinions on various Middle East topics.

(This article appeared on MSNBC's HARDBALL "Hardblog")

Israeli B707 refuels an F-15I
Israeli Air Force B707 tanker refueling an F-15I

Let's assume that Iran has exhausted the world’s patience over its “peaceful nuclear energy” research program - a program most analysts believe is a cover for a nuclear weapons program. Israel has indicated in clear terms that it will not permit Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. What are Israel's options to derail the program?

Most analysts agree that Israel does not have the capability to strike all of the sites associated with the program - estimates range between 12 and more than 20 locations. With limited power projection capabilities, Israeli intelligence analysts will determine the critical portions of the program - the key elements that if destroyed will slow down the effort. In 1981, the Israeli air force successfully crippled the Iraqi nuclear program with a daring daylight air raid on the key element of that program – the French-built Osirak reactor at At-Tuwaythah, just south of Baghdad. The single most critical element In the Iranian program is thought to be the centrifuge facility at
Natanz (also known as the Esfahan enrichment facility).

Natanz, Iran - Click image for larger view
Natanz, Iran

http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/iran/natanz5.htm

The Natanz facility is a challenging target. The heart of the facility is the centrifuge area, located in an underground, hardened structure. The Iranians are fully aware of Israeli capabilities and no doubt have studied what the Israelis did to the Iraqi program a quarter century ago. They are also aware of the demonstrated capability of the American-made precision-guided penetrating munitions ("bunker busters") in the Israeli inventory. The Iranian program has been dispersed all over the country; the facilities have been built with American and Israeli capabilities in mind and are protected by modern Russian air defense systems.

Aside from the difficult nature of the target itself is its geographic location in relation to Israel. The straight-line distance between Israel and Natanz is almost 1000 miles. (At-Tuwaythah was only 600 miles). Since the countries do not share a common border, Israeli aircraft or missiles must fly through foreign - and hostile - airspace to get to the target.

The least risky method of striking Natanz is with Israel's medium range ballistic missiles, the Jericho II or III. Details on the exact capabilities of these systems are unknown, but it is believed that the Israeli missiles can reach Natanz. However, to travel that far, the missiles will have a limited warhead weight, probably less than 1000 pounds. It is doubtful that these warheads will be able to penetrate far enough underground to achieve the desired level of destruction. That points to an attack by the Israeli air force's American-made fighter-bomber aircraft as the most likely option. The Israelis have 25
F-15I Ra'am (Thunder) and about 30 F-16I Sufa (Storm) jets.

Israeli Air Force F-15I
Israeli Air Force F-15I

How will the aircraft fly from their bases in Israel to a target located 200 miles inside Iran? There are two realistic ways to get there – either through Saudi Arabia or Iraq, possibly even using Jordanian airspace as well. Either route is a one-way trip of about 1200 miles. Even though Turkey and Israel have had a defense agreement since 1996, using Turkish airspace is not likely politically and would require the attacking aircraft to fly over 1000 miles inside Iranian airspace. It is also doubtful that the Israelis would jeopardize operational security by consulting with the Turks.

 Possible Flight Routes

The Saudi Arabia option (red). The strike aircraft depart southern Israel, enter Saudi airspace from the Gulf of ‘Aqabah or Jordan, fly 800 miles of Saudi airspace to the Persian Gulf and then 300 miles into Iran. Although the Israelis traversed Saudi airspace when they attacked the Iraqi facility in 1981, Saudi Arabia and Jordan have since significantly upgraded their air defense capabilities and share information with each other.

Since the Israeli air force does not operate stealth aircraft, there is a reasonable expectation that at some point the aircraft will be detected over Saudi Arabia, either by ground based radar or the AWACS airborne radar platforms. Whether Saudi defenses could - or would - be able to stop the Israelis is uncertain. Perhaps the Saudis would turn a blind eye and claim ignorance - after all, a nuclear-armed Iran is a potential threat to the Kingdom as well.

The Iraq option (blue). The strike aircraft depart southern Israel, cross 300 to 400 miles of Saudi airspace or a combination of Jordanian and Saudi airspace, and enter Iraqi airspace as soon as possible, continue across 500 miles of Iraq to the Persian Gulf and then on to the target. Entering Iran from Iraqi airspace would create too much of political firestorm. As it is, the use of Iraqi airspace will require the cooperation of the United States. Although Iraq is a sovereign nation, its skies are controlled by the American military. That said, allowing Israeli aircraft to ingress from Iraq is likely out of the question.

Either of these options carries the risk that once the actual attack on the facility is made, the viability of the return route is in jeopardy – all forces in the area will be on alert. The planners may opt to go to the target one way and back home via another.

The limiting factor in Israeli planning is the great distance to the target. Can Israel’s fighter-bombers conduct this mission without refueling? Combat radius - the distance an aircraft can fly and return without refueling - is difficult to calculate, and depends on weapons payload, external fuel tanks, mission profile, etc. It is even more difficult when dealing with Israeli aircraft because they will not release performance data on their assets.

The best "guestimate" of the combat radius of the F-15I and F-16I, outfitted with conformal fuel tanks, two external wing tanks and a decent weapons load, is almost 1000 miles. Either of the two possible flight routes above is about 200 miles further than that. To make up for the shortfall, the aircraft could be fitted with an additional external fuel tank, but this will require a reduction in the weapons load. Given the accuracy of the weapons in the Israeli inventory, that might not be problematic. However, if the aircraft are detected and intercepted, the pilots will have to jettison the tanks in order to engage their attackers. Dropping the tanks will prevent the aircraft from reaching their target.

Air refueling. This raises the question of air refueling? This is a limitation for the Israelis. While Israel has a large air force, its focus has been on the Arab countries that surround it. In recent years, it has sought the capability to project power against a target over 1000 miles away. To do this, Israel has acquired five B707 tanker aircraft. However, the tankers would have to refuel the fighters in hostile airspace. The B707 is a large unarmed aircraft and would be very vulnerable to air defenses.

Israeli B707 refuels F-15I fighter-bombers

Looking at the two scenarios, air refueling over Saudi Arabia (red route) would be very risky. It would have to be done at low altitude to evade detection and will probably be at night. Using Iraqi airspace (blue route) will be somewhat less difficult as altitude will not be an issue.

Of course, the tankers would have to get to Iraqi airspace and back. The use of Turkish airspace for the tanker aircraft to enter Iraq is probably not an option for the same reasons that it is not an option for the fighters – political sensitivities on the part of the Turks and operational security considerations on the part of the Israelis. Another possibility is American cooperation – allow the Israelis to stage their tankers from an American air base in Iraq. These tankers could fly to Iraq though international airspace around the Arabian Peninsula and over the Persian Gulf. It would be too far for them to return to Israel without landing to refuel, otherwise the Israelis could refuel the fighters over the Gulf.

American participation? There are other possibilities, from allowing Israeli fighters to land and refuel at U.S.-controlled bases in Iraq, to having U.S. Air Force tankers refuel the Israeli aircraft over Iraq. A diplomatic nightmare, maybe, but certainly a military possibility.

Theoretically, the Israelis could do this, but at great risk of failure. If they decide to attack Natanz, they will have to inflict sufficient damage the first time - they probably will not be able to mount follow-on strikes at other facilities.

When all the analyses are done, there is only one military capable of the sustained widespread air operations required to eliminate Iran's nuclear weapons research program - the United States. Again, a diplomatic nightmare, but certainly a military possibility.

Operation Evening Light and Operation Eagle Claw” is presented as an historical summary and is more relevant then you can imagine in light of current events. http://community.fox6.com/forums/ShowThread.aspx?PostID=905345#905345 or http://eqneedf.spaces.live.com

The shah's air force had more than 450 modern combat aircraft, including top-of-the-line F-14 Tomcat fighters and about 5,000 well-trained pilots. By 1979 the air force, numbering close to 100,000 personnel, was by far the most advanced of the three services and among the most impressive air forces in the developing world. Reliable information on the air force after the Revolution was difficult to obtain, but it seems that by 1987 a fairly large number of aircraft had been cannibalized for spare parts.

A total of 14 air bases are currently operational: Ahvaz, Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Chan Bahar, Dezful, Doshan Tapeh (Tehran), Ghaleh Morghi (Tehran), Hamadan, Isfahan, Mashhad, Mehrabad (Tehran), Shiraz, Tabriz and Zahedan. Soviet-made aircraft are distributed throughout the country to fufill mission roles of ground attack, transport, training and interception. Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Dezful, Hamadan, Tabriz and Mehrabad are the centers for ground attack squadrons. Shiraz is the home of the interceptor squadron. It also provides training along with, Mehrabad, Doshan Tapeh and Isfahan. Shiraz also houses the transport squadron. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/airforce.htm

Taking on Iran's air force - Defense Tech: Taking on Iran's air force

The stand-off with Iran over its nuclear ambitions was just beginning while I was embedded with Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 332 at Al Asad air base in Iraq. More than once the fliers lamented that they'd probably be back in the States by the time the "inevitable" bombing of Iran got underway.

Me: Oh God. We can't afford a war with Iran

Aviator #1: Whatever. We'd kick their asses.

Aviator #2: No, they've got F-14s!

Aviator #3: Yeah, my wife [deployed to northern Iraq] saw one!

Aviator #1: We'd still kick their asses.

Me: Oh God.

If, God help us, the stand-off does turn violent, U.S. air power will play a critical role. For months pundits have predicted a massive bombing campaign to target Iran's nuclear facilities, and perhaps even to attempt regime change.

But don't expect Iran's air force to roll over like Iraq's did in 1991 and again in 2003. Unlike the Iraqi air force, the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) appears to be well-armed, well-trained and eager for a fight. Besides the aforementioned F-14 Tomcats, 79 of which the U.S. sold to the country before the Shah was deposed, the air force operates several dozen of each of the following types:

J-7 (Chinese-built MiG-21 derivative)
MiG-29
Su-24
F-5E
F-4E Phantom
Mirage F1

All told, the IRIAF flies as many as 300 fighters. All are older designs, but have been maintained and, in many cases, upgraded by the indigenous aerospace industry, which has become proficient in reverse-engineering weapons and spare parts -- and perhaps even engines. And the IRIAF has aerial tankers too -- a force multiplier only the most advanced air forces maintain.

Veteran aviation correspondent Tom Cooper and his co-writer Liam Devlin wrote a fascinating feature for a recent issue of Combat Aircraft Magazine, profiling the IRIAF. The authors interviewed IRIAF defectors and U.S. Navy aircrew that have tangled with Iranian fliers over the Arabian Gulf. The feature cautions against the Western habit of underestimating the IRIAF:

In November 2003, a USAF E-3 Sentry flying a patrol over Iraq tracked a formation of no less than 16 IRIAF F-14As ... This was the largest group of Iranian F-14s detected in flight by the U.S. military since 1997, when nine IRIAF Tomcats were tracked over the southern Persian Gulf by the U.S. Navy. ... During the summer of 2005, several Su-24s were observed operating over the Persian Gulf, armed with Chinese-made C802K-2 anti-ship missiles. ... Iranian Phantoms were sighted as well, usually carrying AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder [air-to-air missiles].

Now that the 1st Fighter Wing has its first F-22 squadron combat-ready, and with the Navy's Super Hornets equipped with electronically-scanned radars, we have the capability to beat the IRIAF. But it wouldn't necessarily be an easy fight. Throw in Iran's SA-15 surface-to-air missiles and you've got a tough air-defense nut to crack. And remember ... an air campaign might be just a prelude to a ground invasion. Last year I stood on the Iraq-Iran border and listened to Iranian armored divisions throw down practice artillery barrages. The Tennessee National Guardsmen I was with (the 278th cavalry regiment equipped with M-1 Abrams tanks) admitted that they couldn't punch through that border if they wanted to.

We must find a diplomatic solution to the problem of Iran's nuclear ambitions.

They took an F-5E airframe, sized it up to fit their knock-off of the MiG-29 engine, and added a 2nd tail. Horrible by our standards, but it's probably better than 1/2 the stuff being used by the locals over there anyway. The big threat would be that they build it themselves, so if they had a mind to they could possibly compensate for a difference in abilities with US/Euro fighters by spamming it.
Firebrand strategist to head Iran’s Air Force

Tehran, Iran, Jan. 21 – A senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards who once vowed that “no part of the Islamic world is going to be safe and secure for America” was named as the new head of the Guards’ Air Force.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a decree on Saturday, appointing Brigadier General Hossein Salami as the new commander of the Air Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). Another senior Guards commander, Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Zahedi, was put in charge of the IRGC Ground Forces.

Salami is known as the father of the IRGC’s “asymmetric warfare” doctrine, which he helped to develop in the months preceding the war in Iraq. At the time, Salami was Director of Operations in the IRGC command headquarters.

The military doctrine is based on two components as strategic tools in any military confrontation: the massive use of suicide operations to target U.S. and Western interests around the world, and the use of weapons of mass destruction.

On July 4, 2004, General Salami called for the destruction of the United States during a ceremony to recruit suicide bombers that were willing to attack Western and Israeli targets. Continued

Iran deploys locally-manufactured warplane
Hopefully soon to be scrap metal courtesy of our Raptors ..
Associated Press Tehran, September 6, 2006

Iran deployed its first locally-manufactured fighter bomber plane on Wednesday during large-scale military exercises, state-run television reported.

"The bomber Saegheh or Lightning is similar to (the American) F-18 but more powerful. It was designed, optimised and improved by Iranian experts," the report said.

The report said the Iranian air force had commissioned Saegheh after many test flights in the past year.Television footage showed the takeoff and flight of the airplane. The plane had a small cockpit and only one pilot. It launched two rockets. "Saegheh is capable of launching both rockets and bombs," the report said.

General Karim Ghavami, commander of Iran's Air Force, told state-run television that the war games were being held "to show the trans-regional forces that we are ready to defend our country up to the latest drop of our blood." The Islamic republic, which views the United States as a foe, is concerned about the US military presence in neighbouring Iraq and Afghanistan. It also has expressed worry about Israeli threats to destroy its nuclear facilities, which the West contends could be used to make a bomb but which Iran insists are for civilian uses only.

During manoeuvres dubbed "The Blow of Zolfaghar," which began in August 19, Iran test fired short range surface-to-surface, sub-to-surface missiles, new air defence system and laser bombs.Iran's military test-fired a series of missiles during large-scale war games in the Persian Gulf in March and April, including a missile it claimed was not detectable by radar that can use multiple warheads to hit several targets simultaneously. After decades of relying on foreign weapons purchases, Iran now says it is increasingly self-sufficient in its military equipment claiming it annually exports more than $100 million (euro81 million) worth of military equipment to more than 50 countries.

Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and the Saegheh fighter plane. The government has not said how many warplanes it will build. It announced in early 2005 that it had begun production of torpedoes. Lt. Fishman

Iran IRIAF - a new Air Force? Window to the Past (70/80s)

IRIAF - a new Air Force? With the change of the regime in Iran, in February-April 1979, and worsening of relations to the USA, it was expected that Iran would not be able to operate its Tomcats any more. Such expectations were reenforced to leave the country. By September 1980, however, the Iranian Air Force - re-named into "Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force" (IRIAF) - managed to make an increasing number of airframes operational, despite immense problems due to repeated purges of its officers, some of which were executed, others imprisoned, forced into exile or early retirement. The IRIAF survived these times and its Tomcats were to become involved in the bloody war against Iraq even before this officially began, scoring their first kill already on 9 September 1980. This "IRIAF", namely, was still the "old" IIAF by everything but the name: a majority of its well-trained officers, pilots, and technical personnel, all of which were patriots beyond any doubt, remained with the service and were to give much more than anybody could describe as a "call of duty" in the following war.

In Service with the IIAFIran ordered a total of 80 Grumman F-14A Tomcats in two batches, one of 30 and another of 50 aircraft, in early 1974. The first F-14 was delivered to the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) in January 1976, and the first two units were fully operational by the summer of 1977, by when the training of additional crews was advancing at a very high pace. By late 1978, the 80th F-14 produced to Iran was built as well; instead of being delivered, however, the aircraft was kept in the USA to be used as test-rig for installation of the USAF-style "boom-and-receptacle" in-flight refuelling system. Meanwhile, over 120 Iranian pilots and 80 RIOs were qualified for the Tomcat, and an additional group was about to finish their training. Since 1977 the IIAF F-14s were engaged in a series of tests, which put the plane and its weapons system to the extremes, and eventually ended by several spectacular test-firings of AIM-54s, two of which might have scored unofficial world-records for the range, speed, and the height reached by the missiles in flight. In October 1978 also two IIAF F-14As intercepted a high and fast-flying Soviet MiG-25 over the Casspian sea, forcing it to abort a recce run over Iran, and in turn ending similar Soviet operations over the country. group

The first and only country to receive F-14 Tomcat was, The Nirouyeh Havaiyeh Shahanshahiye Iran, or Imperial Iranian Air Force. Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat had regularly been flying unrestricted over Iranian territory, and IIAF had no mean of intercepting these high-speed intruders. Thus, the search for a new fighter/interceptor begun. Iranian pilots were virtually flown and tested every fighter available at the time including MiG's (some done secretly in other countries). The final report which indicated pro's and con's of each fighter suggested the F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle as the best fighters. In August of 1973, the IIAF selected the F-14 Tomcat ( From 1970 Iraq was in contact with French government to equip their Air Force with Mirage F-1, this was another factor for IIAF to choose F-14 and start planning for purchase, operation and training for F-14). The initial order signed in January of 1974 covered 30 Tomcats, but in June 50 more were added to the contract. At the same time, the Iranian government-owned Bank-e-Melli stepped in, and agreed to loan Grumman $75 million to partially make up for a US government loan of $200 million to Grumman, which had just been cancelled. This loan save the F-14 program and enabled Grumman to secure a further loan of $125 million from a consortium of American banks, ensuring at least for the moment that the F-14 program would continue. Thanks to Bank-e-Melli.

The Iranian Tomcats were virtually identical to the US Navy version, with only a few classified avionics items being omitted. The base site for Iranian Tomcat operations was at Isfahan’s (Khatami Air Force Base) and 1 Squadron at Shiraz Tactical Fighter Base. Imperial Iranian Air Force aircrews began to arrive in the USA for training in May of 1974,The crew were mainly veteran F-4 pilots. The first 4 pilots who came to "Miramar Naval Base" in California for F-14 training were:General Abdolhosain Minousepehr (Commander of Khatami AFB).Major Mojtaba ZangenehMajor Mohammad Farahawar Capt. Kazem Heidarzadeh. Shortly after, the second group went to "Oceana Naval Base" in Virginia. They were:Capt. Jamshid Afshar.Capt. Hosein Taghdis.Capt. Hassan Afghantoloee.Capt. Jalil Moslemi.Capt. Abolfazl Hooshyar.Capt. Reza Attaee. Capt. Bahram Ghaneii.Capt. Mohammad Pyrasteh.Capt. Abbas Amiraslani.Capt. Shahram Roostami.Capt. Javad Shookraii. After completion of F-14 training in USA they became F-14 Instructor pilots. After returning to Isfahan they started training the rest of the pilots with the cooperation of 4 American F-14 Instructors which was part of contract.Major Farahawar flew one of the F-14 from USA to Iran.Major Zangeneh was the Iranian pilot who tested the "Phoenix" missile in USA.(The Islamic regime purged all of them from Air Force, except "Rostami" and "Attaee" .)

The Iranian Tomcats were fairly late on the production line, and were therefore delivered with the TF30-P-414 engine, which was much safer than the compressor-stall-prone P-412 engine. The first 2 of 79 Tomcats arrived in Iran in January of 1976. By May of 1977, when Iran celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Royal House, 12 had been delivered. At this time, the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbats were still making a nuisance of themselves by flying over Iran, and the Shah ordered live firing tests of the Phoenix to be carried out as a warning. In August of 1977, IIAF crews shot down a BQM-34E drone flying at 50,000 feet, and the Soviets took the hint and Foxbat over flights promptly ended.

The IIAF Tomcats bore the US Navy serial numbers of 160299/160378, and were assigned the IIAF serial numbers 3-863 to 3-892 and 3-6001 to 3-6050. The last of 79 Tomcats were delivered to Iran in 1978. The last Iranian Tomcat (BuNo 170378) was retained in the USA for use as a test bed. Iran also ordered 714 AIM-54A Phoenix missiles, but only 284 had been delivered at the time. Toward the end of the 1970s most suppliers were cancelled by the new government, including an order for 400 AIM-54A Phoenix missiles.

Imposition of a strict arms embargo against Iran by the West caused a severe spare parts and maintenance problem, with many pilots and maintenance personnel following the Shah into exile. As a result, by 1980 the Iranian Air Force was only a shadow of its former self. This embargo was to have an especially severe long-term effect on the Tomcat fleet, since the embargo prevented the delivery of any spares.

The Iran-Iraq war began on September 22, 1980 with an Iraqi air attack on six Iranian air bases and four Iranian army bases. It was followed by an Iraqi land attack at four points along a 700-kilometer front. Air power did not play a dominant role in the Iran-Iraq war. During the first phase of the war, Iranian aircraft had the fuel and the endurance to win most of these aerial encounters, either by killing Iraqi aircraft with their first shot of an AIM-9 sidewinder or else by forcing Iraqi fighters to withdraw. Iranian pilots had the edge in training and experience, but as the war dragged on, this edge was gradually lost because of the repeated purges within the ranks of the Iranian officers which removed experienced officers and pilots who were suspected of disloyalty to the Islamic regime. The Iranians could not generate more than 30-60 sorties per day, whereas the number of sorties that Iraq could mount steadily increased year after year, reaching a peak as high as 600 in 1986-88.

It is extremely difficult to get any reliable estimates of just how many Iranian F-14As were in service at any one time during the war, with planes having been deliberately cannibalized to keep some flying. In the summer of 1984, it is estimated that Iran could fly only 15-20 Tomcats, maintaining them largely by cannibalization. Very often, Tomcat served in a mini-AWACS role by virtue of their powerful radars and was deliberately not risked in combat.

The Iraqi high command had order all it's pilots not to engage with F-14 and do not get close if F-14 is known to be operating in the area. Usually the presence of Tomcats was enough to scare the enemy and send the Iraqi fighters back.

The Iranian F-14s scored most of their kills with AIM-54A Phoenix missiles during the war with Iraq losing only one Tomcat in combat when it got cut off-guard by a MiG-21 (Pilot "Ale Agha" and Rio...??. Lost their life).Another Tomcat was lost due to loss of control when the aircraft entered in spin (Both pilot and RIO Ejected). And a Ground to air missile hit another Tomcat over "Khark" island (Pilot was Capt. Hazin).

It is documented that Iranian F-14As have shot down Iraqi fighters, including Mirage F1s, SU-22, MiG-21, MiG-23, and MiG-25. An Iranian Tomcat scored a kill against an Iraqi Mirage F1 as late as the spring of 1988.

Iranian capabilities in this area may have taken place on February 11, 1985, when 25 Iranian F-14A Tomcats took a mass fly by over Tehran. In spite of the Western arms embargo, Iran been able to maintain a more-or-less steady supply of spare parts for its fleet of Tomcats, from Iranian aircraft industries based at 1st tactical air base in Tehran. The number of Tomcats in service with Iran is reported as many as 60 aircrafts. Some of these parts also seem to have been smuggled into Iran by Israel. Also there is rumor of Russians provided assistance to upgrade tomcats aging airframe. US government supplied arms to Iran in exchange for its assistance in getting hostages held in Lebanon released.

However, the AN/AWG-9 radar is certainly operational, and the Iranian Tomcats can fire AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow missiles. Most Iranian Tomcats flew with a missile load of four Sparrows and two Sidewinders.

Rumors had been going about that Iranian F-14As had been fitted with the Russian made engine and ejection seat and has the capability to launch air-to-surface anti-ship missiles.

Pillars of the Temple of Liberty

Hezbollah, the Taliban, and al Qaeda know not the Pillars of the temple of liberty so elegantly told to us by Abraham Lincoln in his address to the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois. His gentle words give me inspiration and aforementioned militants in Lebanon sponsored by Libya and Syria have no reverence for general intelligence, sound morality, and in particular, a reverence for the Constitution and laws, molded from reason – cold calculating, unimpassioned reason, the words of Abraham Lincoln.

“Upon these let the proud fabric of freedom rest as the rock of its basis; and as truly as has been said of the only greater institution, the gates of hell shall not prevail.

‘In the great journal of things happening under the sun, we, the American People, find our account running, under date of the nineteenth century of the Christian era. — We find ourselves in the peaceful possession, of the fairest portion of the earth, as regards extent of territory, fertility of soil, and salubrity of climate. We find ourselves under the government of a system of political institutions, conducing more essentially to the ends of civil and religious liberty, than any of which the history of former times tells us. We, when mounting the stage of existence, found ourselves the legal inheritors of these fundamental blessings.

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? — Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! — All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” - The Perpetuation of Our Political Institutions: Lincoln's address to the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois (27 January 183

“It is the eternal struggle between these two principles — right and wrong — throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time; and will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of humanity, and the other the divine right of kings. It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, "You toil and work and earn bread, and I'll eat it."

No matter in what shape it comes, whether from the mouth of a king who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation and live by the fruit of their labor, or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving another race, it is the same tyrannical principle. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” - Fourth Lincoln-Douglas Debate (18 September 185 . http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Abraham_Lincoln#The_Lyceum_Address_.281838.29

I seek nether fame or fortune, but the very principles of freedom, seeking a better understanding of my world future generations shall inherit. Like old soldiers I too shall fade away as so many before me, and those that have fallen in recent time shall, unless remembered and honored by those still living, while my prayers go out to there families and loved ones they left behind, always remembering there sacrifices, hardships they endured, and with reverend respect I shall proudly honor fallen patriots and dear departed now laminated in the hearts of their loved ones.

Those that chose not to honor our fallen patriots know this, I’m not your friend nor shall I rest until your defeated. You are the enemy of all decent people and anyone who supports the pillars of liberty. To blame our fallen patriots death on the tolerance of a nation bound to support liberty and equality for all is not only ridiculous but extremely offensive and those that dishonor the dead will one day regret their position.

As I honor my ancestors, who gave so much to secure our freedoms, I am saddened their struggle is not yet confirmed by nations of the Middle East who neither desire nor seek liberty. Customs of old that won’t bend for a more gentle and peaceful association with neighbors, brothers and sisters, and now a world wide threat, not only to the Pillars of liberty but humanity itself.

Fascism in every form, must forever be defeated if governments in all it forms who seek only peace, shall prevail, and to wait until the threat reaches your door step, allows for the possibility of a nations destruction.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Lebanese people are in the midst of a civil war and their fight must be the international communities fight or nation after nation shall topple.

Afghanistan and Iraq, new to democracy have the opportunity to establish their own Pillars of liberty, and the resolve of the United States of America and collation forces will guarantee it.

Hezbollah, the Taliban, and al Qaeda are not the ordained rulers of mankind nor does their religion have any significant value accompanied with present disregard for human life.

Early emigrants of the new world in the Americas, and those that followed from all reaches of the world, bringing with them ideologies as diverse as the food we eat, have been able to live in peace because of the sacrifices of the Civil War patriots, a nation divided cannot stand, a people united will prevail. Patriots of all wars and conflicts from the end of that great tragedy that united a people, guaranteeing equality and justice for all, until present day have secured the continuation of the Pillars of Liberty.

If we forget our beginning, or have not the time to remember where it all began, the human experience of the past will merely become e a distant memory and the end shall surely be our fate.

To Abraham God said: “That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

And again, the inspired prophetic parting blessing upon Rebekah, leaving her family to become the wife of Isacc: And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands opf millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.

The correct Fenton translation is: “...and your race shall possess the gate (plural) of its enemies”.

“Abraham's wife, Sarah, gave her handmaiden Haggar to him as she couldn't have children. Haggar produced Ismael. (Big mistake on Abraham's part) then later when Haggar started getting uppity with Sarah, Sarah asked him to get rid of Haggar”

Haggar’s son Ishmael was promised by God, that a great nation would rise from his descendants and today who has all the major oil reserves in the world, not with standing Venezuela and Mexico and in the past, the Soviet Union.

America and Great Brittan at one time controlled the gate ways of the oceans and more then half of the tillable temperate-zone lands of the earth after 1800AD. The rich agricultural lands of the Mississippi Valley; the vast wheat and grain fields of the Midwest, of Canada and Australia; the great Forest Lands of the Pacific Norwest and other parts of the world; the gold fields of South Africa, Australia, United Sates (Alaska) and British Isles; natural waterfalls and means of power and consequent prosperous industrial and manufacturing districts of England and the eastern U.S.; the choicest fruit lands of our Pacific Coast and Florida. What other nations combined ever possessed such material wealth? And nearly all this wealth came to us after A.D. 1800.

How significant, then, that Robert Fulton operated the first steamboat in 1803, precisely when Britain; and America suddenly began to multiply in national wealth! And also that it was the nineteenth century that saw the development of the railroads.

Notice Genesis 39:2, 23 – The eternal was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man….the Eternal was with him, and that which he did, the Eternal made it prosper. And God did prosper Joseph’s descendants, most likely Britain and America, with the fabulous birthright promised Joseph’s sons.

Consider Moses’ dying prophetic blessing, foretelling what would happen to each of the tribes of Israel in the latter days. And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the Lord be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath, and for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon, and for the chief things of the lasting hills, and for the precious things of the earth and fullness thereof. …….let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh both)..His glory is like the firstling (firstborn (birthright holder)) of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns (Great Britain’s national seal)….with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.

Whoever is Ephraim and Manasseh today must have been in possession of the earth’s choicest agricultural, mineral, iron, oil (carbon monoxide), coal (acid rain), nuclear energy (nuclear waste), timber and other resources.

Just to what extent has almighty God fulfilled his promise in us to the descendants of Joseph in these latter years since A.D. 1800; promises of the “precious fruits brought forth by the sun……the chief things of the ancient mountains and the precious things of the earth”?

Said Charles M. Schwab, steel magnate, before the Massachusetts Bankers Association, January 5, 1921:”Our United States has been endowed by God with everything to make it and keep it the foremost industrial and commercial nation of the world” (today with global trade and major differences in wages who knows).

World petroleum output in 1950 was almost 3,800 million barrels. Of this total the United States alone produced more than one half, nearly 52%. Together, the British Commonwealth and the U.S. produced 60% of the crude petroleum, not including our vast foreign investments. But by 1966, the fateful year in which the British Colonial Office in London closed its door, that 60% of the entire world’s crude petroleum output had been reduced to 32%.

Britain and America mined 1 ½ times as much coal as all other nations combined. But by 1966 our portion had shrunk to less than one-third of the world production.

Together, the British Commonwealth and America produced, in 1950, threeforths of the world’s steel, the U.S. alone producing 1 1/3 times as much as pig iron as all other nations combined.

By 1966, this basic index of wealth had skidded down to one-third (33.6%) of steel production and only 17.8%of pig iron.

In 1950, we possessed nearly 95% of the world’s nickel (chiefly from Canada); 80% of the world’s aluminum and 75% of the zinc; as compared to 1966 figures of: Nickel: 3.6%; Aluminum: 40.2% and Zinc: 12.4%.

In 1950, the British Commonwealth completely dominated the production of chromate (from South Africa). Together Brittan and America produced two-thirds of the world’s rubber, and dominated the world’s copper, lead, tin, bauxite and other precious metal outputs. But by 1966, we produced only 2.3% of the world’s chromate, 23.4% of its copper, 9.9% of its lead, no tin and 6.3% of its bauxite.

The British Commonwealth produced two-thirds of the world’s gold, about 1266,000,000 (642 million) in 1950, while the U.S. had three times as much gold reserve as the total for the rest of the world. Ut by 1966 the U.S. was in serious jeopardy.

We produced and utilized two-thirds of the world’s output of electricity, the U.S. producing 283 thousand million kilowatt-hours in 1948, and the United Kingdom and Canada outstripping Russia, Germany and France combined. But by 1966 we produced only 20.1%.

Great Brittan and the United States did possess well over half of the world’s merchant fleet tonnage. But by 1966 the figure was only 32.5%. At one time the British Isles constructed more vessels than any other place on earth and by 1966; several other nations outstripped Brittan and America. Today the U.S. has 6 major ship yards building ships with around 45,000 production workers. In 1950, we also possessed about one-half of the world’s railroad mileage. By 1966 our combined railway freight shipping was only 26% of the world total, due in large to trucking.

Where as the United States alone once produced 73% of the automobiles, by 1966, the U.S. combined with the U.K. produced 55% (44%) from the United States alone. In 1966, Japan, Germany, France, and Italy began making huge gains in production and sales.

It is within our grasp to defeat fascism if we unite in the effort and exploitation of renewable energy technologies will pave the way for our future energy needs if only we marry ourselves as a nation of people to these goals, yet dishonoring our own does noting for our cause.

Every year in America 100,000s of teenagers are becoming of voting age and if there not to deep into video games, televising the events of 9/11 should be at least an annual tradition to keep everyone sober, and God forbid an even greater tragedy occur, we may begin televising more often attacks from Shake-n-Bake NUTS on us or our allies.

Our nation becoming more and more lawless, with over a million in our jails and flagrant disrespect for the law resulting in the death of hundreds of law enforcement officers each year, and “here it is approx half way through the year and sixty-six (66) Police Officers have already lost their lives. Getting up each day and putting on a uniform be it Military or Civilian that makes you a target takes allot of courage.” - SERGEANT MAJOR of the FORUM

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania (1759)

My father now is proud of me I'm sure, but when I joined the Navy he boycotted my graduation. Now he’s a constitutional ranger as many years ago he evolved and followed his personal religious beliefs rather then an institution or a man. Sometimes you have to break out for yourself and your own ideas.

The issues of today are not unlike those of yesterday, whether we as a nation of free people will up hold what is wrong or right, whether we will support the ideals of the past, remain stead fast in our devotion to liberty and if necessary give our lives for the preservation of the living constitution.

Before us, possibly our greatest challenge of a nation faces us, and what we do to change the tides will dictate our future, a future counted in blood from countless Patriots who gave their lives so we could be secure in our homes from oppression both at home and aboard.

We find ourselves embroiled in diversity as to whether we should fight those who oppose our very way of life, diversity that comes from both Americans and people from every nation as to whether we should unite to fight a global war on terror, the stake of humanity itself in the balance.

It is not for me to say, that our allies are with us or not, but by their actions alone, we will no who stands on the side of right and who stands on the side of wrong.

“Iran is a significant, respected player in the Middle East which is playing a stabilizing role, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said on Monday.”In the region there is of course a country such as Iran – a great country, a great people and a great civilization which is respected and which plays a stabilizing role in the region," he told a news conference.” http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3284157,00.html

While we attempt to digest these words from Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, we must remember that France has been beside us from the beginning as so elegantly put by French Major General Bastien at Valley Forge on Alliance Day in 2003

“In the past and as we speak, our soldier always have been fighting side by side for common values. It has always been the case and I am convinced that it will continue to be the case.

I would like to remind everyone that the USA and France have never been at war against each other.

Our countries have fought side by side from the very beginning, in Norfolk and elsewhere, to help your ancestors win the Revolutionary War, to help them set up a free and independent nation you can be proud of.

I also wish to remind everyone that the Statue of Liberty, standing in New York Harbor, was given by the people of France to the people of the United States, in October 1886, in recognition of the friendship established between our 2 countries during the American Revolution. As we all know, this statue, now a world heritage site, has grown as the most universal symbol of political freedom and democracy, two values that we have been sharing from the very beginning and will continue to share.

A few decades after this famous statue was given to your country, both our countries fought again side by side during WWI. During that terrible war, France, a country the size of Texas, with a population of less than 38 million people at the time, paid a very high price with the death of more than 1.4 million young men and women.

During that War, just like Lafayette's soldiers did for the newly established United State, thousands of young American soldiers, under the command of General Pershing, gave their lives to enable my country to recover its liberty. This is something the French people will never forget. http://rleeermey.org/viewtopic.php?t=9219

In all nations of the world, there are those who seek liberty above all things, and while it may not be visible and public sentiments both in the United States and abroad sometimes seem unwilling to openly criticize fascism in all it’s form, throughout the world, when the cry of Freedom is heard, true believers of liberty will assemble, defeating thy enemy, for right is surely on the side of true Patriots.

In the up coming trials and tribulations we as a people must endure, surely the greatest threat is ourselves if we don’t unite in a common effort, a common goal, to defeat fascism, the very enemy to liberty.

As Americans assemble at our State Capital on the 12th of August, 10,000 strong, protesting our nation’s involvement in the Iraq War, support of Israel from un provoked attacks from those only desirous of their defeat, with one goal, the extermination of the State of Israel and the Jewish people, and our continued support of young democracies in Afghanistan Iraq and Lebanon, that given time will flourish if those influencing through terror tactics are defeated; let us remember, that Americans in there diversity, who themselves desire peace, are frustrated with the resolve of our President to protect them, feel the only course is to back off, in hopes that fascism will some how go away or not approach our boarders if we give in and let Hezbollah, the Taliban, and al Qaeda do what they want, to who they want, when ever they want to do it.

To step back now, is to usurer in our defeat, to go forward, with the resolve our ancestors during the Civil War and our Revolutionary War had, the resolve of true Patriots to the Temple of the Pillars of Liberty, will see our way through the trials and tribulations of the future.

When the descendants of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh throughout all reaches and parts of the world unite against a common threat, the threat of true believers of liberty, fascism in all its form will be defeated.

Where Joseph’s descedants emigrated too throughout the world, we know not, but we can assume their with us today, emigrating to all reaches of the world, to include the new world, present day South and North Americas, from countries in Europe from France, Germany, Spain, Great Brittan, Australia, Holland and countless other countries, nations themselves divided on issues confronting every free spirited soul.

In general, people of all nationalities with the exception of Hezbollah, the Taliban, and al Qaeda desire peace, but during trying times, its often easier to follow rather then lead, allowing others to dictate your future in fear of retaliation.

The Lebanese people have been terrorized so long, their accustomed to it and until that day, when their oppressors are squelched, they will know no peace, nor will they embrace liberty, Freedom, Equality and Justice for all.

Make no doubt about it, their defeat is our own, and if democracy can only exist in the United States of America or those countries who seek our governments protection to preserve their liberties, then Freedom will not prevail for the subjects who take liberty fore granted.

Enemies of Freedom are the enemies to mankind and fascism in all its form has no place in a free society, and if I must choose a side, I choose the side of liberty.

“Let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring. And when this happens, when we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old negro spiritual, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
